PETERSEN MEDIA- Returning to the racy Ocean Speedway on Friday night, Tommy Tarlton would be part of an exciting battle for the race win, that would ultimately see him cross the stripe third in what was a drag race to the checkered.
“We didn’t get the win, but we were all pleased with how things went,” Tarlton said. “It got off to a slow start, but we really got the car working.”
With 24 cars checked into the Santa Cruz Count Fairgrounds facility, Tarlton would time the Elite Landscape Construction/Tarlton and Son Inc./Executive Auto Sales No. 21 machine in fourth fastest in qualifying time trials.
Lining up in the second row of his heat race, ‘The Night Rider’ would finish in the fourth spot, and earn a spot in the new Ocean Speedway dash, where the one pill would put him on the pole.
Finishing second in the dash, Tarlton would find his Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino/Pabco Gypsum/WFO Apparel No. 21 entry on the front row of the feature event.
When the action came to life, Tarlton was shot out of a cannon as he quickly jumped into the lead and began pulling away from the field. Getting into traffic early in the event, Tarlton’s lead would evaporate, but he would still lead.
A couple of cautions would slow things up, and restarts would see Bud Kaeding hang with the leader, as they again found traffic late in the race. With Tarlton and Kaeding racing in close quarters, Tarlton would get up over the cushion and lose position, as he ran in the second spot.
The final lap saw Tarlton feel pressure for the second spot, and coming to the flag stand, Tarlton would just narrowly lose the spot by the slimmest of margins, as he would be scored with a third place finish.
“We have been plenty fast at this track all year long, and hopefully we can come back and grab a win after a week of,” Tarlton said. “Huge thanks to this team for working hard and continuing to give me awesome cars on a nightly basis.”
